Celebrate America Recycles Day

Document Actions

In keeping with Atlanta’s long-range commitment to a Greener Atlanta, the city is preparing to acknowledge and celebrate “America Recycles Day” on November 17, 2007. Atlanta Recycles Day will be a platform to launch several new initiatives that support the mayor’s goals for a “greener” Atlanta. The Department of Public Works (DPW) and its Solid Waste Services (SWS) division will educate the public about recycling. SWS recently announced a new incentive-based recycling program that rewards recycling participation through an expanded curbside recycling program.

In April, during Arms Around Atlanta ~ Earth Day Celebration 2007, hundreds of volunteers cleaned up neighborhoods and in addition to hundreds of pounds of litter, recovered over 3,000 tires. Putting the recycled tires to great use, The Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs (DPRCA) has installed a state-of-the-art recycled, rubberized jogging track, replacing the concrete track at Isabel Gates Webster Park. The rubberized track is more physically conducive to exercise for the human body and more economical to maintain.

The day will begin at 8:00 a.m. with a 5K Fun Run “The Mayor-thon – Race to Recycle”. To celebrate the opening of the newly installed track, a “green” ribbon cutting ceremony will follow at 9:15 a.m. Family fun activities will follow throughout the day.
